Square of Blue, Streak of Yellow

Standard

“When you go out to paint, try to forget what objects you have before you a tree, a house, a field, or whatever. Merely think, here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow, and paint it just as it looks to you, the exact colour and shape, until it gives your own naive impression of the scene before you.”

“What concerns me when I work, is not whether the picture is a landscape, or whether it’s pastoral, or whether somebody will see a sunset in it. What concerns me is – did I make a beautiful picture?”

Whistling Shen by Rosemary Allen

Artist Rosemary Allen shares:

“And here is my new painting from Shiloh’s class, Las Promesas,  part of the Red Key Quest from Cosmic Cowgirls. This is called Whistling Shen. Shen is Chinese for heart and mind and the hummingbird, acting as my ear is pointing to an acupuncture point where I get my best visions…making me whistle out to other ‘birds’.”

This painting was created during Shiloh Sopia’s class, Cosmic Cowgirl’s Red Key Quest.

Gracious 2012

“To acknowledge our ancestors means we are aware that we did not make ourselves, that the line stretches all the way back, perhaps to God, or to Gods. We remember them because it is an easy thing to forget; that we are not the first to suffer, rebel, fight, love, and die. The grace with which we embrace life, inspite of the pain, the sorrows, is always a measure of what has gone before.”

“Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.”
